Wisdom Tooth Extractions

At Synergy Dental Group our dentists’ objective is to preserve teeth but sometimes tooth extraction in Parkdale, Vic can’t be avoided. Read on to learn more.

A safe and caring environment for your next oral surgery. Here at Synergy Dental Group, we’re all about preserving natural teeth for as long as possible but unfortunately, there are times when this isn’t possible or even feasible. Tooth removal is always a last resort so you’ll be pleased to know that when we have no other choice, tooth extraction at our Parkdale, Vic practice, is carried out safely and gently, to ensure patients remain as comfortable as possible.

Here’s how we approach a tooth extraction.

What patients can expect:

If you have extensive tooth decay, crowding, or an impacted wisdom tooth (one that has got stuck in the gums) then it’s likely that our Parkdale dentists will recommend tooth removal.

Whether it’s a conventional tooth extraction or a wisdom tooth extraction, our dentists will perform the procedure in the same way, using local anaesthetic and dental sedation for nervous patients coupled with our brand of gentle dentistry.

Patients may experience slight pressure as gentle force is applied to loosen the tooth but should feel no pain. Most people are surprised at how quick and easy the procedure is.

Tooth extraction in Parkdale, Vic – What happens next?

Our dentists will ask you to bite down on a piece of gauze. This is to encourage a blood clot to form which helps prevent infection at the site. Dr Narkhede has a special interest in oral surgery and will give you some post-surgery advice to help minimise any discomfort during your recovery and in the case of wisdom tooth extraction, to reduce any swelling or bruising that may occur.

Other tips from our Parkdale dentists include:

  • Brush and floss your teeth as normal taking care not to brush the extraction site and disturb the newly-formed blood clot

  • Avoiding eating hard or crunchy foods for a few days following surgery

  • Avoid overly hot or cold food and beverages for up to 3 days

  • Take any prescribed pain relief as requested

  • Use saltwater rinses during the day to keep infection at bay and to help reduce any swelling

Frequently Asked Questions About Tooth Extraction

How long will it take for my tooth extraction to heal?

Parkdale patients can expect their mouth to feel a little sore or tender once the anaesthetic has worn off, but they should feel more comfortable within 24 hours. It can take up to 2 months before the site has healed sufficiently for patients to plan a replacement tooth restoration.

Are there any risks associated with tooth extractions or oral surgery?

As with all surgical treatments (and tooth/wisdom tooth extraction is no different) there are risks involved. However, these are extremely rare and provided your treatment is carried out by an experienced dentist and you follow after-care instructions, it is no riskier than having a tooth filled.

Do wisdom teeth have to be extracted?

No, if your wisdom teeth have come through the gums normally and aren’t interfering with neighbouring teeth, there is no need to have them removed. Typically, impacted wisdom teeth are the ones that cause the greatest discomfort and pain and since wisdom teeth are not needed, often extraction is the best course of action.

Being told you need tooth extraction can be distressing. However, patients can rest assured that they are in safe capable hands.
