The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a ‘sliding’ joint or hinge that connects the mandible or lower jaw bone to the temporal bone that forms part of the side and base of the skull. It’s these flexible joints that enable us to speak, chew, and yawn.

A TMJ disorder (TMD) is when the hinges are not functioning as they should and can cause a great deal of pain and discomfort. Fortunately, we provide safe and effective treatment for TMJ disorders at our Parkdale, Vic dental clinic and will soon have you feeling better.

What are the symptoms of TMD/TMD Disorder?

TMD is made up of various clinical conditions that are all associated with the temporomandibular joint and/or the adjoining facial muscles. Common symptoms include:

  • Pain in the TMJ or surrounding facial muscles

  • Jaw pain

  • Ear pain

  • Facial pain

Patients with TMJ disorders in Parkland often find that their jaw movement is limited and may also experience painful popping, clicking or grating in the jaw joint when they open or close their mouth.

What causes TMD?

Unfortunately, there isn’t a single explanation for the cause of TMD. Multiple factors can be attributed to muscle tightness and problems with the jaw and joints. Possible reasons that can influence TMD include:

  • Misaligned teeth

  • Stress and anxiety

  • Injury to the TMJ or the surrounding nerves and muscles

  • Teeth grinding (bruxism)

  • Sleep disorders (link to sleep apnoea page)

  • Arthritis in the TMJ
